SYLLABUS UPDATE: Audio slideshow pitch & assignment

The class syllabus has been updated with details under Week Eight regarding the audio slideshow pitch and under Week Nine regarding the audio slideshow assignment. Remember, audio slideshow pitches are due Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 10 p.m.

  • Assignment: Audio slideshow pitch: Submit story pitch for upcoming assignment, per requirements on shared pitch doc [http://bit.ly/int1audiopitches]. Be prepared to present in 60 second newsroom-style pitch during class during Week 9 session. Due Date: Thursday, Nov. 3, 10 p.m.

Share your pitches for the Nov. 10 audio slideshow assignment on this doc. Written pitches are due Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 10 p.m.,  in order to allow instructor time to review before class on Nov. 4.

Follow the pitch formatting requirements below and be sure to address the key story- and slideshow-related questions also shown.

Remember, your pitch should go beyond general “ideas” into real stories with specific characters, narratives, locations, etc. The idea of the pitch is to help your editor be sure you’re on the right track before you begin extensive field production and post-production.

AUDIO SLIDESHOW POINT: In 1-2 sentences, explain what is the main point/focus for your audio slideshow report.
AUDIO SLIDESHOW PLAN: Outline what the approach is for gathering material for the audio slideshow, such as arrangements to interview main subject(s), location shoot.

Questions Your Pitch Should Address

  • Does it pass the “So what? Who says? Why now?” test?
  • Why would this story be well-suited for an audio slideshow?
  • What key visuals would you anticipate capturing for this audio slideshow?
  • What key SOT and natsound would you anticipate capturing for this audio slideshow?
  • What are any important logistical challenges to getting the story as audio or images (i.e. access, lighting/noise conditions, language barriers) and what’s your plan for overcoming them?
